The really young red with bright fruit and plenty of aromatic herbs is the 2024 Versos de Valtuille. It's juicy and tender, with very fine tannins and a clean and tasty finish. It has contained ripeness, 13.2% alcohol and the textbook profile of a young and fruit-driven wine with the advantage of seven months in very good oak foudres. 50,000 bottles produced. This could be the benchmark "young" red from Valtuille.
The wines from the Estévez family in Bierzo have been in the hands of winemaker César Márquez since 2021. They now own 17 hectares of vineyards and work with a further four from local growers. They have vines in some of the best zones of Valtuille. 2023 is a cooler vintage, and they achieved a fresher profile, with wines below 13% alcohol. Production is 70,000 bottles.

Familiebedrijf Bodegas Estévez heeft diepe wortels in de lokale wijntraditie van Bierzo. De familie Estévez, oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Valtuille de Abajo, keerde na jaren in Mexico te hebben gewoond – een Mexicaanse ballingschap als gevolg van de Spaanse burgeroorlog – terug naar hun geboortegrond om hun wijnbouwtraditie voort te zetten. Hun wijngaarden zijn gelegen op de heuvels van Bierzo, waar ze voornamelijk werken met de inheemse druivensoorten mencía en godello. Bodegas Estévez combineert traditie met moderne wijnbouwtechnieken, wat zorgt voor wijnen die de essentie van Bierzo prachtig weerspiegelen. Hun focus op oude wijnstokken en minimale interventie benadrukt het unieke terroir van de regio.
