Bodega Can Leandro
Valencia L'Arenal 2023
Reviews
The Wine Advocate 90/100
I found some rustic aromas in the 2023 L'Arenal, a pure Monastrell that reveals some notes of fresh meat and blood, a touch of iron and earth and some hints of leather and wet fur. The palate reveals abundant, dusty tannins that give it an earthy texture, a little astringent.
Like the rest of the Mediterranean, the people at Can Leandro have suffered the heat and drought from the last vintages and have focused their work on the viticulture to keep their vines balanced. They are recovering some local varieties like Bonicaire and Arcos and regrafting some vineyards. They are also moving to a new winery and have purchased some concrete eggs and vats. In 2024, they produced a new village red, Les Finques. They work 35 hectares in their village, Ontinyent, all old, dry-farmed and head-pruned vines, plus 2.5 hectares of 15-year-old vines, and in 2023, they planted a further four hectares and are hoping to plant some more in 2025. They are in the process of obtaining the organic certification for their vineyards. They produce 40,000 bottles.
