The 2020 Brouilly Sur Pierreux delivers aromas of dark berries, cassis and cherries mingled with hints of vine smoke and spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated palate that's framed by lively acids and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently mordant finish. 2021-2033
As I've written before, located in Odénas, Laurent Martray works with old vines in Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly. Winemaking is traditional, with a proportion of whole bunch, two-week macerations and comparatively long élevage in used barrels and foudres. The results are deep, flavorful, classically structured wines that evolve gracefully in bottle. This is resolutely traditional Beaujolais, harkening back to the wines of yesteryear, before carbonic maceration, the natural wine movement and the craze for Beaujolais nouveau changed how this historic region was perceived. Martray has produced a set of powerful, characterful, concentrated wines in 2020. Note that service temperature (i.e., not too warm) is especially important this year.

Laurent Martray is wijnmaker in Odenas sinds 1987. Zijn wijnstokken staan aangeplant rond de Mont Brouilly, waar de cuvées La Folie, Sur Pierreux en Corentin (AOP Brouilly) vandaan komen. De cuvées Les Feuillées en Loïs komen van de steile, zonnige hellingen van de Côte de Brouilly en dragen de – nog iets hoger gewaardeerde – AOP Côte de Brouilly. Het wijngaardwerk gebeurt hier volledig met de hand: omdat de grond heuvelachtig en zeer stenig is, is mechanisatie amper mogelijk. De opbrengst wordt beperkt gehouden door flink te snoeien en er wordt handmatig geoogst. De wijnen ondergaan een gemiddelde rijpingstijd van 12 tot 16 dagen in eiken vaten en tonnen. Met hun purperrode kleuren en aroma’s van frambozen, aardbeien, zwarte kersen, rozen, viooltjes en irissen komt de elegante kant van Beaujolais in deze wijnen optimaal naar boven.
